Philadelphia Phillies Fire Manager Rob Thomson

The Philadelphia Phillies have decided to part ways with manager Rob Thomson after a 9-19 start to the 2026 season. Bench coach Don Mattingly will now take over as manager.

The Philadelphia Phillies entered the 2026 season as defending NL East champions with sky-high expectations and a star-studded, $317 million luxury-tax roster. Instead, they've stumbled out of the gate with one of the worst starts in franchise history, sitting at roughly 9-19 through their first 28 games. The offense has been inconsistent, the defense sloppy, and the bullpen unreliable.

It's hard to say Rob Thomson should have lost his job, or whether the players just played so badly that there wasn't much he could do.
