Charles Barkley Blasts NFL's Greedy Christmas Invasion
Charles Barkley is not happy with the NFL holding games on Christmas Day. Chuck believes Christmas Day was and should be the day for the NBA to shine. He believes the NFL putting games on for Christmas Day is the league being greedy.
"The NFL got greedy and started adding Christmas games. We used to have this day to ourself but Roger Goodell and them pigs at the NFL always want to hog every day of the week now. ... Christmas is an NBA day."- Charles Barkley
The NBA has owned Christmas Day since 1947, just one year after the league's founding. That inaugural game saw the New York Knicks defeat the Providence Steamrollers 89-75 at Madison Square Garden. Since 2008, the NBA has scheduled five games on December 25, turning it into an all-day spectacle.
The NFL, long dominant on Thanksgiving, began dipping into Christmas in 2020, scheduling games whenever the holiday fell on a weekend. But starting in recent years, the league has made it annual, regardless of the calendar, culminating in a full tripleheader in 2025, streamed across Netflix and Prime Video.
