Canelo Alvarez to Face WBC Champion Christian Mbilli in Riyadh Showdown

In one of the most anticipated returns in recent boxing history, Saul “Canelo” Alvarez has agreed to a high-stakes title fight against undefeated WBC super middleweight champion Christian Mbilli. The bout is scheduled for September 2026 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, during the Mexican Independence Day weekend.

The deal, first reported by The Ring magazine’s Mike Coppinger and confirmed across major outlets, marks Canelo’s first fight since his unanimous decision loss to Terence Crawford in September 2025. This bout stripped him of his undisputed super middleweight titles.

Who Is Christian Mbilli?

Christian Mbilli (29-0-1, 24 KOs), the 31-year-old Cameroonian-French Canadian known as “Solide,” has rapidly climbed the super middleweight ranks. Born in Yaounde, Cameroon, and based in Montreal, he turned pro in 2017 and quickly built a reputation as one of the division’s most relentless pressure fighters.

Mbilli captured the WBC interim title with a first-round TKO of Maciej Sulecki in June 2025. He defended it on the undercard of Canelo-Crawford with a split draw against Lester Martinez in September 2025. When Crawford vacated the full WBC belt after retiring, Mbilli was elevated to undisputed champion status in January 2026

At 5'8" with a 72" reach, Mbilli brings explosive power and suffocating forward pressure that has troubled even elite operators. He’s never been beaten and enters this fight as the fresher, hungry champion looking to make his first defense against boxing’s biggest star.

What’s Next?

While the exact date and full undercard remain to be finalized, the buzz is already building. Boxing fans worldwide are marking their calendars for what promises to be a blockbuster night in Riyadh. Canelo returns seeking redemption; Mbilli defends his crown against the face of the sport.

One thing is certain: when Canelo steps back into the ring this September, the entire boxing world will be watching.
