Gregg Popovich Steps Down From Coaching

Gregg Popovich has stepped down as head coach of the San Antonio Spurs after 29 seasons. He will now be transitioning to a full-time role as the team's president of basketball operations.

The 3 time coach of the year has had medical issues over the years.  He had a mild stroke in November 2024 and an undisclosed medical incident in April 2025.

Popovich, the NBA’s all-time winningest coach with 1,422 regular-season victories and five championships, will remain involved in the franchise’s day-to-day operations. Mitch Johnson, who served as interim head coach during Popovich’s absence, has been named the permanent head coach.
