Should we feel sorry for SMU?

Southern Methodist University(SMU) has managed to remain undefeated through their non-conference schedule and the early part of their conference schedule. Coming into the season, SMU knew they would not be able to compete in the postseason which would include the NCAA tournament. They were a 6 seed in the tournament last year and got robbed by bad goaltending call losing to UCLA 60 -59.

SMU was penalized by the NCAA for helping a student named Keith Fraizer with his school work in an attempt get his GPA high enough to be eligible to play for SMU. Coach Larry Brown was knowledgeable of this information and failed to report it. The NCAA suspended coach Brown for 9 games, took away 9 scholarships, and banned SMU from competing in the postseason. Even though SMU was caught red-handed violating the NCAA rules, I find myself feeling sorry for this basketball program. I feel that the student players are the real losers in something that had nothing to do with. This team is ranked 8th in the country, led by senior's Nic Moore, Jordan Tolbert, and Markus Kennedy which make part of the core of this team. These students are being robbed of an experience simply because some SMU personnel had a moment where they showed a lack of integrity. SMU will remain to have a basketball program and Larry Brown will still have his job. I guess I find myself feeling sorry for the students overall.

What do you think?
